They carry almost the same name, both draw warmth from the outside air and post very similar efficiencies. And yet an air-to-air heat pump and an air-to-water heat pump don’t do the same job. One blows tempered air into your rooms; the other powers your entire central heating and your hot water. Choosing the wrong one means risking having to add to the installation later — or missing out on a grant. Here’s how to decide.
Two heat pumps, two jobs
The basic principle is identical: a fluid captures the warmth present in the outside air, even in cold weather, and concentrates it to heat your home. What changes radically is what the pump does with that heat.

The air-to-air heat pump diffuses air directly into the rooms, much like air conditioning — which it also provides in summer, in reversible mode. The air-to-water heat pump, on the other hand, heats water that circulates through your central heating network: it’s a genuine alternative to a gas or oil boiler.
The air-to-air heat pump: simple, affordable, versatile
The air-to-air heat pump is made up of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units (the well-known “splits”) that blow tempered air. It’s a lightweight solution to install, requiring neither a water circuit nor major plumbing work.
Its strengths
- Contained purchase price: it’s the most affordable heat pump, especially as a mono-split for a single room.
- Cooling included: in summer, it runs in reversible mode and cools the home — a real comfort bonus.
- Quick installation: no water circuit, often fitted in a single day.
Its limits
The air-to-air heat pump produces no domestic hot water: you have to keep a separate water heater for the shower and kitchen. Nor does it connect to a water-based central heating system: it mainly suits electrically heated homes or works as a supplement. And since it’s treated as reversible air conditioning, it rarely qualifies for the heating grant.

The air-to-water heat pump replaces your boiler outright. It heats water that feeds your radiators or your underfloor heating, and also produces your domestic hot water via a tank. It’s the reference solution for a serious energy renovation.
Its strengths
- Complete central heating: it connects to your existing circuit and heats the whole house.
- Domestic hot water included: shower, kitchen, bathroom — everything is covered.
- Eligible for grants: in Wallonia, the grant can reach up to €4,000 when it replaces a fossil-fuel boiler, which clearly reduces its real cost.
Its limits
The entry ticket is higher and the installation more involved: connection to the water circuit, sometimes the replacement of a few undersized radiators. Its efficiency is also better with underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators than with old cast-iron radiators, which require hotter water.
This is the usual coefficient of performance of these pumps: for 1 kWh of electricity consumed, they deliver close to 4 kWh of heat. Air-to-air and air-to-water post very similar COPs — performance doesn’t separate the two families.
How much to budget
The two technologies don’t play in the same budget league, because they don’t cover the same needs.
- Air-to-air heat pump: count on roughly €4,500 to €8,000 depending on the number of indoor units to install.
- Air-to-water heat pump: expect rather €8,000 to €15,000 including installation, since it replaces all heat production and hot water.
The gap looks large, but it narrows once the grant is deducted: only air-to-water, most often, qualifies for the regional heating grant, which can amount to several thousand euros. In use, both post low consumption thanks to their excellent efficiency.

Rather than looking for “the best” pump in the absolute, start from your situation. A few questions are enough to make the answer obvious in most cases.
- Do you have water-based central heating? If yes (radiators or underfloor heating), air-to-water connects to it naturally and replaces the boiler. If you heat electrically, air-to-air makes more sense.
- Does domestic hot water matter to you? Only air-to-water produces it. With air-to-air, you need a separate system.
- Are you aiming for the grant? The heating grant targets almost exclusively air-to-water replacing a fossil fuel. For air-to-air, don’t count on it.
- Is cooling a priority? Air-to-air cools in summer in reversible mode — an advantage that a classic air-to-water doesn’t offer.
- What’s your budget? On a tight envelope and without central heating, air-to-air offers the best comfort/price ratio. To replace a boiler, air-to-water is the obvious choice, with the grant to back it up.
In practice, the choice almost always comes down to two criteria: do you have water-based central heating, and do you want hot water included? Two “yes” answers lead to air-to-water; otherwise, air-to-air is worth studying. Good sizing then finishes framing the project, whatever type you choose.
What if we combined the two?
Nothing forces you to pick a camp forever. Some well-insulated homes pair an air-to-water heat pump for central heating and hot water with an air-to-air heat pump in a living room or office to enjoy cooling in summer. It’s rarer, but perfectly possible when summer comfort weighs in the balance and the budget allows.
