The prosumer tariff is not fixed: six parameters determine the amount you will pay each year. Understanding these levers lets you size your installation to minimise this charge.
- Installed capacity (kWp)
The prosumer tariff is proportional to the capacity of your installation. The more kWp you install, the higher the annual charge. Sizing adapted to your consumption reduces the injected surplus and therefore the calculation base.

New installations since 2020 have a bidirectional meter: it measures drawn and injected energy separately. The old net-metering meters (phased out by a CWaPE ruling) are no longer installed and will be progressively replaced.
- Grid operator (DSO)
Ores and Resa apply distinct regulated tariffs approved by CWaPE. The province of Liège (Resa) has historically slightly higher tariffs. Check your DSO on your electricity bill.
- Self-consumption rate
The more of your solar production you consume directly, the less you inject into the grid and the less prosumer tariff you pay. A household present during the day or that has adapted its uses (washing machine, dishwasher) reaches 35–45 % self-consumption without a battery.
- Presence of a storage battery
A battery of 5 to 10 kWh lets you store the surplus produced at midday to consume it in the evening. Self-consumption typically rises from 30–40 % to 60–70 %, which reduces net injection and therefore the prosumer tariff by 40 to 50 %.

Ores and Resa are the two distribution grid operators (DSOs) in Wallonia: Ores covers most Walloon municipalities (Hainaut, Namur, Walloon Brabant, Luxembourg and Liège excl. How does a solar battery reduce the prosumer tariff?
The prosumer tariff is calculated on the electricity you inject into the grid. A battery stores the surplus produced during the day to consume it in the evening, reducing net injection by 40 to 50 %. Concretely, for a 5 kWp installation, a 5 kWh battery can bring the annual prosumer tariff from ≋ 125 € down to ≋ 70 €, i.e. an annual saving of 55 € that helps pay off the cost of the battery.
Does the prosumer tariff cancel out the benefits of solar panels?
No. The prosumer tariff is a real cost but clearly lower than the benefits of green certificates and savings on the bill. Is there a partial compensation for new installations?
Yes. CWaPE regulations provide for a degressive partial compensation over the first 5 years for installations completed after 1 January 2021. This compensation softens the prosumer tariff early in the installation’s life, the period when the return on investment is most sensitive. It is applied automatically by the DSO on your annual bill.
How is the prosumer tariff calculated on my bill?
