Micro-inverter: every panel works for itself, without dragging down the others

What a micro-inverter is really worth

Each panel has its own inverter fixed under the module. The DC→AC conversion happens right at the roof: there is no single large central inverter, and no common weak link across the whole chain.

The roof, split between an east slope and a west slope, was partly shaded by a large oak at the end of the day. With a string inverter, every shadow dragged down the whole chain. What is the difference between a micro-inverter and a standard inverter? +
A standard (string) inverter is a single unit that converts the power of a whole chain of panels: if one panel weakens, the whole chain aligns on it. The micro-inverter places a small inverter under each panel, which converts the power individually. Each module then produces according to its own sunlight, independently of its neighbours.
Is the micro-inverter really worth it when there is shading? +
Yes, that is precisely its strength. As soon as a chimney, a dormer or a tree shades part of the roof at certain hours, the micro-inverter isolates the loss to the single panel concerned. On a regularly shaded roof, the production gain commonly reaches 5 to 25% compared with a string inverter.
Can you mix several panel orientations? +
Absolutely. Since each panel manages its own power point, you can freely install east and west slopes, several pitches or an L-shaped roof on the same installation, without the least-exposed face penalising the others. This is one of the technology’s great strengths.
Is the micro-inverter safer? +
Yes. Since the conversion happens right at the panel, it is low-voltage alternating current that flows on the roof, not high-voltage direct current as with a central inverter. The risk of an electric arc is greatly reduced and emergency shutdown (rapid shutdown) for rescue services is made easier.
What happens if a micro-inverter fails? +
Only the panel concerned stops producing; the rest of the installation continues as normal. The panel-by-panel monitoring identifies the faulty module straight away, which makes troubleshooting simple and targeted.
